What can fans expect from the Avatar MMO?
The 2009 film, Avatar, is the most financially successful movie ever. The sci-fi epic was the first to gross over $2 billion and is largely credited for creating the widespread popularity of 3D in theaters. But, while Avatar remains unseated at top of the global box office, it feels a bit too late to explore sequels and spin-offs in other media more than a decade after it was first released. For some reason though, that’s what is happening right now. Reckoning is just the latest Avatar game that’s been confirmed. The first one, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, was first showcased at E3 2021 by Ubisoft and is expected to be released sometime this year. According to Disney, Reckoning is a mobile MMORPG designed using Unreal Engine 4 for Android and iOS platforms. The game will reportedly let users create Avatars and explore Pandora. Although Reckoning is an MMO title, Disney confirmed that it will come with single-player, co-op, and PvP modes. As it is set in the Avatar universe, players will encounter both Na’vi clans and the RDA in-game, both of which should pose formidable opponents in their respective rights. Unfortunately, outside of the one piece of key art, there’s little information about Reckoning available. But, if it’s any consolation, Archosaur Games should give Pandora’s world it’s dues graphics-wise. Not to mention, with several big-name publishers behind Reckoning, funding is not going to be an issue for Reckoning going forward. The subsequent Avatar sequels might just end up defining the 2020s. Back in December, James Cameron dropped images of the upcoming Avatar sequel, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters later this year. In addition, at least two more Avatar films are coming within the next half-decade. This would suggest that we could see more games set in the Avatar universe outside of Frontiers of Pandora and Reckoning.
