Case in point, the Entertainment Software Rating Board, otherwise more commonly known as the ESRB. For as long as we can remember, the ESRB and its equivalents from around the globe, have confirmed the existence of games long before they were announced by their respective developers or publishers. In recent weeks, such games include Castlevania Advance Collection, the PS5 version of The Medium, and id Software’s Project 2021B. Now, it seems like the ESRB has leaked a big one: Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut.
What’s Included in Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut?
A “Director’s Cut” subtitle implies that the updated version of the game will receive additional content. Either that, or it will compile all of the downloadable content and/or expansions released for the game under one package. However, with Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch released all the extra content for free. A Director’s Cut would make it more convenient to access all the additional content for Ghost of Tsushima. It’s just that it’s unnecessary. Unless, of course, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut will come with new content. In a way, the existence of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut might have confirmed the rumors about Ghost of Ikishima. According to the information available right now, Ghost of Ikishima is a standalone expansion. It will be available separately from Ghost of Tsushima. It would be similar to what PlayStation Studios did previously with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Uncharted: Lost Legacy, the latter of which has been rumored to be part of the PlayStation Plus July games lineup. What gave the Ghost of Ikishima leak further credence is geography. The real-life Ikishima island is just beside Tsushima. The setting would be perfect for an expansion or standalone sequel. It’s also a more realistic expectation from Sucker Punch. It would’ve been difficult if not impossible for the studio to squeeze in a full sequel in less than a year. With Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut now all but confirmed, the updated version could be a bundle that includes both Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Ikishima. In this scenario, players could still purchase the expansion separately. The Director’s Cut is just a version that comes with both. Of course, this is all just speculation. Director’s Cut might just include cut content from the original game with PS5-specific improvements. This would make it similar to what Kojima Productions is doing with Death Stranding: Director’s Cut. However, with ESRB listing Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for both the PS4 and PS5, a “mere” visual upgrade with additional content is highly unlikely. For now, all we can do is wait for an official announcement from Sony and Sucker Punch.
