After its initial announcement last year, fans have been waiting for Nintendo to post an update that would narrow down Splatoon 3’s 2022 release date. Several hype-inducing gameplay trailers later, we finally know when the squid kids will splatter ink for the Nintendo Switch. According to Nintendo’s most recent announcement, Splatoon 3 will hit the market on September 9. The threequel is a 4v4 shooter reminiscent of Call of Duty albeit with a more child-friendly approach. Instead of guns, players have paintballs at their disposal. The basic premise of Splatoon is that the Inklings and Octolings compete against each other to see who can paint the battleground a particular color the fastest. The violence-averse gameplay along with the bright and vibrant tone have made the Splatoon games a fan favorite among kids and adults alike. As the third title in the best-selling series, Splatoon 3 will improve on its predecessors as it will add a better co-op experience and what appears to be a more robust single-player campaign. Nintendo had fans worried when it delayed the highly anticipated Breath of the Wild sequel to 2023. With only Pokémon Scarlet and Violet scheduled for later this year, Switch owners had few projects to look forward to. Adding Splatoon 3 certainly helps spice up Nintendo’s holiday slate. Hopefully, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope comes out around the same time as well.
