Farrell’s take on the character already made headlines before when we got a brief glimpse of the extensive prosthetic work needed to turn the actor into the supervillain with the beak-like nose and notorious facial features. Under all the makeup, Farrell can barely be recognized at all.

Safety procedures forced the cast and crew to take a hiatus from shooting, and lead actor Pattison came down with the sickness during the course of the project. In the interview, Farrell jokes about the weirdness of ‘Batman’ getting sick.
Farrell spoke about his role in The Batman, revealing that the Penguin will only appear in “5 or 6 scenes”. Whether he dislikes seeing himself on screen in general or is only disquieted by the makeup is unclear but he is glad that the Penguin didn’t get a bigger role so that the movie “won’t be ruined by my presence”. While not as widely recognized as the Joker or Scarecrow, the Penguin has been a major mainstay of Batman’s rogue’s gallery since the start. An opulent gangster whose wealth rivals that of the Wayne fortune, the Penguin loves luxury, excess and robotics, typically relying on silly looking mechanical penguin robots, or actual penguins that have been cybernetically enhanced and brainwashed. Considering that The Batman is aiming for a grimdark, serious tone not unlike Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy as opposed to lighthearted campy comic book fun, we doubt that the Penguin’s silly henchmen will make an appearance. The Batman is slated to hit theatres on March 4, 2022.
