WWE 2K20 would change all of that. The universally panned release forced the game’s developers and publishers to take a step back to reassess things and see where they went wrong. As a result, fans didn’t get WWE 2K21. Instead, Saber Interactive worked on WWE 2K Battlegrounds, which, even though was a fun game, didn’t really replace the wrestling sports sim that fans have come to love and grown up with. Luckily, those who miss the standard WWE 2K game won’t have to wait too long to get their hands on one.
WWE 2K22 Revealed at WrestleMania 37
In previous years, 2K sports and Visual Concepts usually revealed a new WWE 2K game sometime around SummerSlam. However, for WWE 2K22, there was a bit of a change. Instead, fans who tuned in to WrestleMania 37 found themselves with quite the pleasant surprise as a short but welcome teaser trailer for WWE 2K22 dropped. The said trailer confirmed at least two current WWE superstars making an appearance with a glimpse of the kind of gameplay fans should expect in the upcoming title. Perhaps more importantly, the teaser took no time focusing on the numerous visual improvements coming to WWE 2K22 compared to the last title, WWE 2K20. With that said, it’s safe to say that WWE 2K22 is shaping up pretty nicely. We’d go as far as to claim that this is the best that a WWE 2K game has looked yet. It was also pretty sweet seeing the fan-favourite Rey Mysterio drop a 619 against Cesaro at WrestleMania 37. However, apart from the visuals and animation, the trailer didn’t really show much else. Judging by the early reveal though, it’s clear that 2K Sports and Visual Concepts wants WWE 2K22 to succeed. The aforementioned poor reception to WWE 2K20 must have forced them to think about being more open with the next title. Even the game’s slogan, “It hits different”, shows just how much the developers and publishers want to make up for the lackluster product in WWE 2K20 that they gave fans years ago. So far, so good. Of course, for WWE 2K22 to really win fans, a teaser trailer isn’t enough. The game has to look more than just good. It has to run as well as promised too. More importantly, for WWE 2K22, it has to have very little of the technical issues that plagued WWE 2K20, if any at all. Here’s to hoping that extra time and a bit more pressure results in WWE 2K22 avoiding a similar fate to its predecessor. In other wrestling news, WWE superstars Roman Reigns and Sasha Banks are both set to make an appearance in the upcoming Apple Arcade title, Ultimate Rivals: The Court.
